Winner of $10,000 Reasons to Save Contest

Jessica Gaston, her husband, and daughter Hailey, along with Doug Bramble, owner of Valpak of Las Vegas franchise.

When Valpak and sister company set out to find a reason to save, they didn’t realize they would be hearing about a family’s ultimate reason to save – their 5-year-old daughter, Hailey. and Valpak celebrated National Coupon Month with 10,000 Reasons to Save, a national campaign intended to educate and empower people to save more in the every day.

As part of this campaign, the companies launched a contest asking consumers to share personal reasons for saving for a chance to win $10,000.

Close to 500 people entered the contest. Of more than 500 entries in the week and a half entry period, entries were narrowed down to five top candidates. Consumers were then asked to vote for their favorite entries on the website

Hailey’s mom, Jessica Gaston, of Las Vegas, entered the contest, writing about her daughter and family’s heart-wrenching experience.

“When I read that Valpak and were going to sponsor a 10,000 Reasons to Save contest, I saw another opportunity to share Hailey’s story. And when I found out I was a finalist, I was so excited!”

“I save to help my daughter Hailey. She was diagnosed with Leukodystrophy when she was 3 years old. It’s a Terminal Genetic Brain Disease. There is no cure, or treatment, but there are medical bills and medication not covered by insurance.

“Using coupons to provide for our 1 income family has been the best way to live within our means. We have an incredible amount of debt and liens on a 2 story house that doesn’t work for our family. I have opened Hailey’s story to the world to read about her and spread the word or her strength.”

About marsha strickhouser

Plate Girl, or Marsha, is not a girl, but a full grown woman who has been collecting dishes - yes, dishes - since I was a little girl. My grandmother was a newspaper food editor, my mother was a teacher and later an antiques dealer. I am guilty of reading Southern Living magazines ... just to look at the PLATES the recipes were served on.  I have more dishes than I need, and I promise I have given plates and sets of dishes to many, many people over the years. I believe setting a festive table makes the meal better and the day or night more memorable. I live in Tampa Bay were I set my table (and the tables of as many others who let me), as well as visit restaurants, hotels and beaches where I admire and photograph all things I think are pretty.  I have my degree in journalism from the University of Miami and have worked in public relations for more than 20 years.
